Rap and Yoga: The truth of it
I practice a lot of yoga and I listen to a lot of rap. Alot of people, mostly all people who know me, think that I'm a bit odd for this. It doesn't make sense, how a little Asian gal can love rap music so much but also practice so much yoga. I really do, from my soul love rap music and love yoga. I guess if we are looking at these two things on the surface they seem very different. Often times, yoga imagery is depicted as pretty girls who are flexible, wear colorful pants, flowers in their hair and live some sort of "holistic" "vegan" life style while images of rappers are of them flashing their hoes, money, cars, living life in the streets. On the surface level, yoga and rap music appear to be worlds away from each other, but if we look deeper; the core of Yoga and the core of rap music is the same, it's truth.
Yoga is about living your true self, connecting yourself to who you really are and living from that space. The path of yoga is shedding all the suffering, to discover who you really are. It's about realness and honesty. The goal of yoga is enligtenment but we cannot practice with the goal in mind, then you are not practicing yoga-but that's another topic to be discussed. While rap music, is letting truths be known, it's a way to shed our suffering, through lyrics, through music. And if we know anything about hip hop, it's for reals. Keepin it 100. How many times have you heard a rapper say that?
So if we really know what Yoga is about and we really know what rap is about, it's not so odd that they are more similar in their core than they are different. No wonder these two facets are a huge part of my life. I've been listening to rap music since I was 8 years old, and I could not tell you what drew me to it in the first place. (My parents were definitely not listening to Biggie or TuPac around the house and they weren't too thrilled that I was either.) Since I discovered yoga, I have earnestly practiced. The more I practice, the more I can see. I never questioned why I like what I like and why I live how I live, I just do it and I'm gaining more clarity each day. The more I practice, the more parallels of rap music and of Yoga I find. Still I think many people may disagree or find it odd but maybe it's because we are not used to looking at things for what they really are but instead making judgments when we can only see the surface. The surface is fleeting, it's ever changing, the core of us, the spirit of who we are, that doesn't change, and we should let that part of us shine.
This life can be hard to live and it takes a lot of courage to speak the truth and more courage to live it. The power of yoga is to be comfortable with who you truly are and live from there. The power of yoga is living your truth and not letting anyone tell you other wise. Dr. Cornel West says, "The telling of truth allows suffering to speak." So continue to shed your suffering, whatever your practice may be, and allow your truth to shine. Don't let em kill yo shine, you betta live!!

The Voice Season 6 Lives Premiere
Here's to everyone who performed tonight!! You all did fantastic and wishing you so much wellness in your musical path.
I have been waiting since last week to share with you Josh Kaufman's performance of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me." Lawd, help me. Sam Smith is my new favorite artist right now, I keep hearing things I love and it turns out to be him! I posted about him last week, which you can find here.
So when I heard Josh during band rehearsal I had a meltdown. Please enjoy this video as I am still recovering from his performance.
Oh! And an added bonus: I styled him for his band rehearsal looks! You know I love a well dressed man (and he can sang). #dead

Music Obsession Sam Smith- Stay With Me
I just heard this song in a restaurant today and looked up Sam Smith... I am falling apart. This song is so good. Also, did you see his subtle hand movements when he was singing? Yea I saw that. His EP is on heavy rotation right now. Between Sam Smith, Daley and James Vince McMorrow, these white dudes (all from across the Atlantic) have me feelin some type of way. What is happening? I don't know but I'm just going to go with it. Looking forward to the album dropping in June.

Daley: my latest music obsession
I heard a song of Daley's a few month's ago on the radio and shazzaamed it, and now I am in love. From my research on the internet, Daley is a UK based R&B singer, songwriter, 24, curly red hair with super cool style, and a singing style that makes my spirit feel compromised but I can't get enough. Lawd help me. If you don't feel anything when he sings, you are a robot. Just sayin.
You all know how much I love R&B and I especially love R&B that is made by people who don't look like they would create R&B. I like his R&B vibes with elements that aren't traditionally R&B. I love when people surprise us; we expect one thing and get something else. People who break barriers of "what's supposed to be" have my full support, respect and appreciation because they create work that speak from their souls. We are more than what people make us out to be; we are our souls and I love when I can feel someone's soul. (That sounded a little creepy but you understand what I'm saying.)
This is Daley's website and here are some of his songs. Oh and more than half of the songs on his Spotify playlists are some of my favorites (from Luther to Kels). Weak. Dead. Bye.

July 4th and The Best Day ever!
My 2 best friends came to visit me for a celebration that will never be forgotten! Introducing Antanice and Janelle....
Antanice arrived on the 4th, and we went to my friend Hope's place for a small get together. We ate some food, took some pictures and watched fireworks on the beach.

Max gave Antanice a kiss without warning. |

Janelle couldn't make it to the July 4th activities but we picked her up first thing on Friday July 5th--that was the day of the main event anyway. We went to get massages and manicures/pedicures at The Room Organic in Toluca Lake in the morning, followed by a delicious late lunch at Cha Cha Cha's. Unfortunately no pics of our massages/nail treatments but I will say this, it was the BEST massage I ever had. Here's what we had at Cha Cha Cha's along with a pitcher of red sangria...we divided that up quickly so no pics.

LAWD HAB MERCY these men had me dying and the ladies of SWV killed it, they are so beautiful and sound exactly the same after all these years. I wish I could share with you the music that we heard that evening but I do not know how to do that on here...I will post some original songs that were performed that night. 2 TURNT 2 TERMZ
Here's volume 2. This list was 60 songs long but here is what made the cut.
A bit of background about Ne$$a's Best Mix Ever, I love making mixes and sharing them. Last year I made a mix that was 90 songs long for my girlfriend's birthday party which has now inspired me to make lots more mixes.
In honor of 2 Chainz and our President's 2 Termz, I named Volume 2 after them. Volume 1 has to be cut down but will hopefully be shared with you soon. I hope you enjoy! Tell me what you think!
Also, if you like it, you can download the 8Tracks app on your iPhone or Android and you can listen to and share it with everyone and everywhere you go! Yay!!!!

Doo Wop Night
Last night Billy and I went to see Street Corner Renaissance, a doo-wop a capella group, at The Catalina Jazz Bar & Grill.
I love doo-wop music and there aren't very many places that play this music so I was thrilled to be able to see it live. There's so much power and warmth in hearing doo-wop music, especially when sung a capella. The Catalina Jazz Club has great live music pretty much every night. I definitely recommend seeing a show here. The venue is small and the entertainment is always good.
The show was amazing...very close to one of the best shows I've ever seen (running in close race with Mint Condition). These men are extremely talented and great entertainers. I enjoyed every moment of it. Even Billy enjoyed it and he doesn't even like doo wop music, it was that good.
I can't do Street Corner Renaissance justice by talking about them so please, check out their music, click here.

DMX Sings Rudolph
The holidays are upon us and everywhere we hear Christmas songs...I think they start playing them earlier and earlier every year; it used to be after Thanksgiving but I think they started the day after Halloween this year. There's a few songs that I absolutely love like "Last Christmas" by WHAM or "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole but this year, I've added a new favorite: "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" by DMX.
I love DMX's rendition for many reasons: the way he sing/barks the lyrics, the beat he drops for himself by banging on the table, his chains clinging together like bells (very holiday-esque), but my most favorite is the added "Come on!" and "Forever..."
Thank you DMX for singing this song. I've never really enjoyed this song but it is now a holiday favorite.
